How It Works
Austedo (deutetrabenazine) is a vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) inhibitor. It works by decreasing the amount of dopamine available in nerve cells, thereby reducing the abnormal movements associated with Huntington?s disease and tardive dyskinesia. By inhibiting VMAT2, deutetrabenazine prevents the transport of dopamine into synaptic vesicles, leading to decreased dopamine release and subsequent reduction in motor activity.List of Side Effects

List of Contraindications
- Patients with Huntington?s disease who are suicidal or have untreated or inadequately treated depression
- Patients with hepatic impairment
- Concomitant use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of discontinuing MAOI therapy
- Concomitant use with reserpine or within 20 days of discontinuing reserpine
