Description
DARZALEX (daratumumab) is a medication used to treat multiple myeloma, a type of cancer that affects plasma cells in the bone marrow. It works by targeting a protein called CD38, which is found at high levels on the surface of myeloma cells.
Mechanism of Action: DARZALEX works through several mechanisms:
- By binding to CD38 on the surface of myeloma cells, DARZALEX triggers immune-mediated destruction of these cells by activating the body’s immune system, including natural killer (NK) cells and macrophages.
- DARZALEX also directly induces programmed cell death (apoptosis) in myeloma cells.
- Additionally, DARZALEX may help to inhibit the growth of new blood vessels that supply nutrients to myeloma cells, thereby further slowing tumor growth.
- Treatment of multiple myeloma in various settings, including newly diagnosed patients, those who have received prior treatments, and as maintenance therapy after autologous stem cell transplantation.
- Improvement in overall response rates, progression-free survival, and overall survival in clinical trials.
- Reduction in symptoms and complications associated with multiple myeloma, such as bone pain, anemia, and kidney dysfunction.
