How it Works: Evrysdi (risdiplam) is a medication used in the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a genetic neuromuscular disorder characterized by progressive muscle weakness and atrophy. Risdiplam works by increasing the production of survival motor neuron (SMN) protein, which is deficient in individuals with SMA due to mutations in the SMN1 gene. Risdiplam acts as a small molecule splicing modifier that targets the SMN2 gene, a backup gene that produces low levels of functional SMN protein. By modifying the splicing of SMN2 pre-mRNA, risdiplam promotes the inclusion of exon 7 in the mature mRNA transcript, leading to the production of full-length SMN protein. Increased levels of functional SMN protein help improve motor neuron function, prevent muscle degeneration, and preserve motor function in individuals with SMA. Side Effects:
