Description
FLUARIX QUADRIVALENT is an influenza vaccine designed to help protect against four strains of the influenza virus, including two influenza A strains (H1N1 and H3N2) and two influenza B strains. This quadrivalent vaccine is intended for the active immunization of individuals 6 months and older to prevent influenza (flu), a highly contagious viral infection that affects the respiratory system.
The vaccine is typically administered as an intramuscular injection, and it’s recommended to be given annually before the onset of the flu season.
How It Works
FLUARIX QUADRIVALENT works by exposing the immune system to inactivated (killed) viruses or fragments of influenza viruses. The immune system recognizes these inactivated virus particles as foreign invaders and mounts an immune response by producing antibodies. These antibodies remain in the body and, if the individual is later exposed to the actual influenza virus, they help neutralize the virus, preventing infection or reducing the severity of the illness.Mechanism of Action:
- Vaccine Introduction: The vaccine contains antigens (inactive virus fragments) from four different influenza strains.
- Immune Response Activation: Once administered, the immune system recognizes these antigens and produces specific antibodies.
- Antibody Production: These antibodies circulate in the bloodstream and provide immunity by neutralizing the live virus upon future exposure.
- Prevention of Influenza: As a result, the vaccinated individual is protected against infection from the four flu strains covered by the vaccine.
Side Effects
Like all vaccines, FLUARIX QUADRIVALENT can cause side effects. However, these are typically mild and temporary.Common Side Effects:
- Soreness at Injection Site: Pain or tenderness where the shot was administered.
- Redness or Swelling: Localized reaction at the injection site.
- Headache: Mild headache or feeling of pressure.
- Fatigue: Feeling tired or weak after vaccination.
- Muscle Pain: General aches or stiffness in muscles.
Serious Side Effects:
- Severe Allergic Reaction: Signs may include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face and throat, or a fast heartbeat. This is rare but requires immediate medical attention.
- Fever: Some individuals may experience a mild fever, but a high fever should be reported to a healthcare provider.
- Guillain-Barré Syndrome: Very rarely, some individuals may develop Guillain-Barré syndrome, a neurological condition causing muscle weakness and paralysis.
Indications
FLUARIX QUADRIVALENT is indicated for use in individuals aged 6 months and older for the prevention of influenza caused by the influenza virus types A and B.Approved Indications:
- Annual Influenza Immunization: Recommended for individuals aged 6 months and older to prevent flu infections during the flu season.
