Description
Krystexxa (pegloticase) is a medication used for the treatment of chronic gout that is refractory to conventional therapy. Each milliliter of solution contains 8 mg of pegloticase, an enzyme that helps to lower uric acid levels in the blood. It is administered via intravenous infusion and works by converting uric acid to allantoin, a more easily excreted substance.
How It Works
Pegloticase is a recombinant, pegylated uricase enzyme. Uricase catalyzes the oxidation of uric acid into allantoin, which is more soluble and can be easily excreted by the kidneys. This enzymatic action significantly reduces the levels of uric acid in the blood, thereby preventing the formation of uric acid crystals that cause gout attacks. Pegloticase is used when conventional treatments such as allopurinol or febuxostat are ineffective or not tolerated by the patient.Indications
- Chronic gout in adult patients who have not responded to conventional therapy
Contraindications
- Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency due to risk of hemolysis and methemoglobinemia
- Hypersensitivity to pegloticase or any component of the formulation
