Description
Natamet is an ophthalmic suspension containing natamycin, an antifungal agent used to treat fungal infections of the eye. Natamycin is particularly effective against a variety of fungi, including Fusarium, Aspergillus, and Candida species. It is supplied in the form of a sterile suspension for topical application to the eyes.
How It Works
Natamycin works by binding to the sterols in the cell membrane of fungi. This binding alters the permeability of the fungal cell membrane, leading to leakage of essential cellular components and ultimately causing cell death. By disrupting the cell membrane integrity of the fungi, natamycin effectively treats fungal infections of the eye.Indications
- Fungal keratitis (infection of the cornea)
- Fungal blepharitis (infection of the eyelids)
- Fungal conjunctivitis (infection of the conjunctiva)
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to natamycin or any other components of the formulation
- Non-fungal infections of the eye
Side Effects
- Temporary eye irritation or discomfort upon application
- Redness of the eye
- Allergic reactions (rare)
- Blurred vision
- Eye pain or swelling (uncommon)
